Join me as we unravel the island&#8217;s story, dating back to the time when Christopher Columbus first set eyes on this enchanting paradise.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">And then, I’ll give you my list of 10 Must-See Landmarks in Martinique!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>A Brief History of Martinique</strong> </h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="638" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:638/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/La_fondation_de_la_Martinique_en_1635.jpg" alt="Christopher Columbus &amp; early explorers landing in the Americas" class="wp-image-271"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Christopher Columbus &amp; early explorers landing in the Americas</em></figcaption></figure>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Nestled in the Eastern Caribbean, Martinique&#8217;s history is a tale woven with the threads of exploration, colonization, and cultural fusion. In 1502, Christopher Columbus, the intrepid explorer, discovered this lush island during his fourth voyage to the Americas. </p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">However, it wasn&#8217;t until 1635 that the French officially claimed Martinique, setting the stage for a complex history shaped by the forces of European colonialism.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:683/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/sugar-cane-with-sunlight-2023-11-27-05-11-38-utc.jpg" alt="Sugar cane plantation with the sunlight" class="wp-image-272"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Sugar cane plantation with the sunlight</em></figcaption></figure>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">The 17th and 18th centuries saw Martinique transformed into a strategic hub for sugarcane plantations, driving economic prosperity but also introducing the dark legacy of slavery. The island&#8217;s economy thrived, with sugarcane and rum becoming integral to its identity.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">As we delve deeper into Martinique&#8217;s past, it&#8217;s essential to understand that the island&#8217;s history is a tapestry woven not only by European colonialists but also by the resilience and contributions of its diverse population.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:683/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/festival-europe-jazz-the-caribbean-women-dancing-i-2023-11-27-05-16-36-utc.jpg" alt="Caribbean women dancing in costumes at a Caribbean festival as a Must-See in Martinique" class="wp-image-275"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Caribbean women dancing in costumes</em></figcaption></figure>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">The people of Martinique are a vibrant mix of African, Caribbean, and European influences, creating a unique cultural blend that is celebrated today. The legacy of slavery has undoubtedly left its mark, but so has the spirit of resistance and cultural preservation.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="745" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:745/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/the-beautiful-legs-and-dancers-of-the-pacific-and-2023-11-27-05-37-05-utc.jpg" alt="The beautiful legs of women dancers at a Caribbean festival in 10-Must-See Landmarks in Martinique" class="wp-image-273"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>The beautiful legs of women dancers at a Caribbean festival in Martinique</em></figcaption></figure>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">The island&#8217;s cultural richness is on full display during its festivals and events. From the lively Carnival, with its colorful parades and traditional costumes, to the rhythmic beats of the zouk music that echoes through the streets, Martinique&#8217;s cultural tapestry is alive with energy and diversity.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-style-default"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="808" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:808/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/creole-spicy-jambalaya-2023-11-27-04-51-15-utc.jpg" alt="Creole Jambalaya spicy rice with meat and vegetables" class="wp-image-274"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Creole Jambalaya spicy rice with meat and vegetables</figcaption></figure>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">And let&#8217;s not forget about the culinary delights! Martinican cuisine is a delectable fusion of French, African, and Caribbean flavors. From the famous acras (deep-fried codfish fritters) to the hearty colombo stew and the refreshing ti&#8217;punch cocktail, every dish tells a story of the island&#8217;s history and the resilience of its people.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>10 Must-See Landmarks in Martinique</strong></h2>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>1. Saint-Pierre</strong></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex">
<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="751" data-id="280" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:751/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Saint-Pierre_Martinique_seen_from_the_harbor_-_2005-06-15.jpg" alt="Photo of Saint-Pierre, a Must-See Landmark in Martinique: People in boats and by the shore enjoying the beautiful sunshine &amp; warm weather." class="wp-image-280"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Photo of Saint-Pierre, Martinique: By Jean &amp;amp; Nathalie &#8211; Flickr, CC BY-SA 2.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=2653756</figcaption></figure>
</figure>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Our journey begins in Saint-Pierre, once known as the &#8216;Paris of the Caribbean.&#8217; This vibrant town was tragically destroyed in 1902 by the eruption of Mount Pelée or Mont Pelée in French. Today, its ruins stand as a testament to the island&#8217;s resilience and serve as an open-air museum.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>2. Fort-de-France</strong></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:683/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Fort-de-France_-_panoramio_6.jpg" alt="Church in Fort-de-France a Must-See Landmark in Martinique on a beautiful sunny day." class="wp-image-283"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Photo of a church in Fort-de-France: By Vlad Podvorny, CC BY-SA 3.0, <a href="https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=58921565">https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=58921565</a></em></figcaption></figure>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Venturing into the capital, Fort-de-France, we find a bustling city that beautifully blends historic charm with modern vitality. The iconic Schoelcher Library and the vibrant markets are windows into Martinique&#8217;s history and daily life.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>3. Habitation Clément</strong></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:683/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Martinique_-_Habitation_creole.jpg" alt="Habitation Clément, a Must-See Landmark in Martinique - Maison créole historique" class="wp-image-284"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Photo of Habitation Clément &#8211; Maison créole historique: Par JLXP — Travail personnel, CC BY-SA 4.0, <a href="https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=81701757">https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=81701757</a></em></figcaption></figure>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">For a taste of the island&#8217;s sugarcane heritage, Habitation Clément offers a fascinating journey. Once a plantation, this historic site now showcases the art of rum-making and the lush botanical gardens that surround it.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>4. Mount Pelée</strong></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:683/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Ville_de_Saint-Pierre.jpg" alt="View of Mount Pelée from Saint-Pierre, a Must-See Landmark in Martinique." class="wp-image-285"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Photo of Pelée Mountain, Saint-Pierre, Martinique: By Rehcral &#8211; Own work, CC BY-SA 4.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=81687792</em></figcaption></figure>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Dive into the heart of Martinique&#8217;s geology at Mount Pelée. This active volcano, whose name translates to &#8216;Bald Mountain,&#8217; presents a challenging yet rewarding hike to its summit. As you ascend, the landscape transforms from lush forests to volcanic rocks, culminating in panoramic views that stretch across the island and beyond. A journey to the top is a pilgrimage that connects you with the very forces that shaped Martinique.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>5. Jardin de Balata</strong></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:768/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Jardin_de_Balata.jpg" alt="People exploring and enjoying the garden of Balata, a Must-See Landmark in Martinique" class="wp-image-288"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Photo of Jardin de Balata: By Box-Off-Dreams, Julie. &#8211; Own work, Public Domain, <a href="https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=4493677">https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=4493677</a></em></figcaption></figure>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Our next destination, Jardin de Balata, offers a symphony of colors in a botanical masterpiece. Nestled in the hills, this tropical garden showcases the biodiversity of Martinique. Stroll through enchanting paths adorned with exotic flowers, towering palms, and rare plant species. It&#8217;s a living canvas that earned Martinique its nickname, the &#8216;Island of Flowers.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>6. Les Salines Beach</strong></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:683/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/tropical-secluded-sandy-beach-with-coconut-palm-tr-2023-11-27-05-28-48-utc-1.jpg" alt="Tropical secluded white sandy beach with coconut palm trees &amp; blue sky in 10 Must-See Landmarks in Martinique." class="wp-image-290"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Tropical secluded white sandy beach with coconut palm trees &amp; blue sky</em></figcaption></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>8. Anse Couleuvre</strong></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:768/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Anse_Couleuvre_-_vue_cote_sud.jpg" alt="People swimming and laying on the beach of Anse Couleuvre, a Must-See Landmark in Martinique" class="wp-image-292"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Photo of Anse Couleuvre: Par Patrice78500 — Travail personnel, CC BY-SA 4.0, <a href="https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=71768862">https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=71768862</a></em></figcaption></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>9. Sainte-Anne Village</strong></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:768/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Market_in_Saint-Anne.jpg" alt="Market in Sainte-Anne, a Must-See Landmark in Martinique" class="wp-image-293"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Photo of a market in Sainte-Anne, Martinique: CC BY-SA 3.0, <a href="https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=534520">https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=534520</a></em></figcaption></figure>

It&#8217;s a sensory journey through the heart of Martinique&#8217;s culinary and cultural identity.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>10. Diamond Rock</strong></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:768/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Diamond_Rock.jpg" alt="View of the famous Diamond Rock off the coast of Martinique, a Must-See Landmark in Martinique." class="wp-image-294"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Photo of Diamond Rock, Martinique: By Apmarles &#8211; Own work, CC BY 3.0, <a href="https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=2835869">https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=2835869</a></em></figcaption></figure>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Our final destination is the iconic Diamond Rock, rising majestically from the Caribbean Sea. <p>Join me as we discover <strong>10 historically significant places</strong> that you must visit in this cultural gem.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>But first, a historical introduction&#8230;</strong></h2>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Antiquity</strong></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:683/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/photo-of-the-statue-2023-11-27-05-32-09-utc.jpg" alt="Image of an ancient Greek sculpture, representing period of Antiquity" class="wp-image-241"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Image of an ancient Greek sculpture</em>, <em>representing period of Antiquity</em></figcaption></figure>

<p>Our story begins in the mists of antiquity. Vienna&#8217;s history can be traced back to the Roman Empire when it was known as Vindobona. Established around 15 BC, this outpost along the <a href="https://www.google.ca/maps/place/Danube/@45.8450675,8.5410379,5z/data=!4m14!1m7!3m6!1s0x47997e14e88eae97:0x8800350df35eccd7!2sDanube!8m2!3d46.3108097!4d18.9257117!16zL20vMDI2enQ!3m5!1s0x47997e14e88eae97:0x8800350df35eccd7!8m2!3d46.3108097!4d18.9257117!16zL20vMDI2enQ?entry=ttu">Danube River</a> was a strategic military camp, witnessing centuries of Roman influence.&#8221;</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Imperial Vienna</strong></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:683/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/the-famous-hofburg-with-the-michaelerplatz-2023-11-27-05-28-25-utc.jpg" alt="The famous Hofburg with the Michaelerplatz in Vienna, Austria " class="wp-image-242"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>The famous Hofburg with the Michaelerplatz</em></figcaption></figure>

<p>Fast forward to the Middle Ages, and Vienna emerges as a key player in the Holy Roman Empire. The <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Babenberg">Babenberg</a> and later the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_Habsburg">Habsburg</a> dynasties left an indelible mark on the city. The Habsburgs, in particular, turned Vienna into a center of power, with the <a href="https://www.sisimuseum-hofburg.at/en/">Hofburg Palace</a> becoming the epicenter of their vast empire.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The Ottoman Siege</strong></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="973" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:973/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Altomonte_Battle_of_Vienna.jpg" alt="Painting of anti-Habsburg Kuruc rebels in Hungary" class="wp-image-243"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Anti-Habsburg <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuruc">Kuruc</a> rebels in Hungary [1]</em></figcaption></figure>

<p>Vienna faced a pivotal moment in <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Vienna">1683 during the Ottoman Siege</a>. The city, under threat from the Ottoman Empire, found itself at the crossroads of East and West. Thanks to the heroic efforts of the defenders, led by <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_III_Sobieski">King Jan III Sobieski of Poland</a>, Vienna was successfully liberated, marking a turning point in European history.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The Age of Enlightenment</strong></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="674" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:674/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Salon_de_Madame_Geoffrin.jpg" alt="A painting of a reading of Voltaire's tragedy, &quot;Orphan of China&quot; in the salon of Marie Thérèse Rodet Geoffrin in 1755, by Lemonnier, c. 1812" class="wp-image-244"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Reading of Voltaire&#8217;s tragedy, &#8220;Orphan of China&#8221; in the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salon_(gathering)">salon</a> of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marie_Th%C3%A9r%C3%A8se_Rodet_Geoffrin">Marie Thérèse Rodet Geoffrin</a> in 1755, by <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anicet_Charles_Gabriel_Lemonnier">Lemonnier</a>, c. 1812 [2]</em></figcaption></figure>

<p>As we transition into the 18th century, Vienna became a beacon of intellectual and artistic brilliance during the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Age_of_Enlightenment">Age of Enlightenment</a>. Figures like Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven graced the city with their genius, contributing to its status as a cultural capital.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>19th Century and the Congress of Vienna</strong></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="508" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:508/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/La_bataille_dAusterlitz._2_decembre_1805_Francois_Gerard.jpg" alt="A painting of La bataille d'Austerlitz. 2 decembre 1805 (François Gérard)" class="wp-image-245"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>La bataille d&#8217;Austerlitz. 2 decembre 1805 (François Gérard) [3]</em></figcaption></figure>

<p>The 19th century brought both triumph and turmoil. In 1805 and 1809, Napoleon&#8217;s forces occupied Vienna, but the city rose from the ashes. Between 1814 and 1815, the Congress of Vienna convened, reshaping the map of Europe and solidifying Vienna&#8217;s role as a diplomatic hub.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The Austro-Hungarian Empire</strong></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="682" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:682/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/the-natural-history-museum-with-the-statue-of-mari-2023-11-27-05-34-39-utc.jpg" alt="The Vienna Natural History Museum with the statue of Maria Theresa with a cloud covered and moody sky" class="wp-image-246"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>The Natural History Museum with the statue of Maria Theresa</em></figcaption></figure>

<p>The late 19th century saw Vienna as the dazzling capital of the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austria-Hungary">Austro-Hungarian Empire</a>. The <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vienna_Ring_Road">Ringstrasse</a>, lined with grand buildings, symbolized the city&#8217;s imperial grandeur. However, the empire&#8217;s dissolution after World War I ushered in a new era for Vienna.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Between the Wars</strong></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="681" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:681/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/elderly-writer-reads-work-at-vintage-typewriter-2023-11-27-05-17-55-utc.jpg" alt="Elderly writer reads his work at vintage typewriter in home office." class="wp-image-260"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Elderly writer reads his work at vintage typewriter in home office.</em></figcaption></figure>

<p>The interwar period was marked by economic struggles and political upheaval. Vienna became a melting pot of ideas, a breeding ground for intellectuals like Sigmund Freud and a hotbed for artistic innovation, notably with the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vienna_Secession">Secession movement</a>.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>World War II and Reconstruction</strong></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:683/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/re-enactors-armed-rifles-and-dressed-as-world-war-2023-11-27-05-24-46-utc.jpg" alt="Re-enactors Armed Rifles And Dressed As World War 2 German Wehrmacht Infantry Soldiers Fighting" class="wp-image-247"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Re-enactors Armed Rifles And Dressed As World War II German Wehrmacht Infantry Soldiers Fighting Defensively In Trench.</em></figcaption></figure>

<p>WW2 brought dark days to Vienna, with the city facing destruction and occupation. The post-war period saw the division of Austria, and Vienna emerged as a neutral city, becoming a center for diplomacy during the Cold War.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Modern Vienna</strong></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:768/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/panoramic-view-of-vienna-cityscape-of-roofs-of-ho-2023-11-27-04-55-24-utc.jpg" alt="Panoramic view of Vienna, cityscape of roofs of houses, skyline, domes of cathedrals and churches in morning at dawn, Vienna, Austria" class="wp-image-249"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Panoramic view of Vienna, cityscape of roofs of houses, skyline, domes of cathedrals and churches in morning at dawn, Vienna, Austria</em></figcaption></figure>

<p>In the latter half of the 20th century, Vienna transformed into a modern, cosmopolitan city. It became the host of international organizations, including the <a href="https://www.un.org/en/">United Nations</a>. Today, Vienna seamlessly blends its imperial past with a forward-looking embrace of innovation and culture.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><em>Historical Vienna is like&#8230;</em></h3>

<p>a symphony, composed of triumphs, challenges, and cultural crescendos. This city has witnessed the rise and fall of empires, the birth of masterpieces, and the resilience of its people.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Boston, Massachusetts</h2>

<p>Our journey of the <strong>Top Places to See in New England</strong> begins in the heart of New England – Boston, Massachusetts. The capital is not just historically rich but also offers a vibrant urban atmosphere.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:683/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/boston-massachusetts-usa-2021-08-26-18-13-08-utc.jpg" alt="Top places to see in New England: beautiful shot of downtown Boston" class="wp-image-212"/></figure>

<p>Take a stroll through the city’s <a href="https://www.compass.com/neighborhood-guides/boston/back-bay/">neighborhood, Back Bay</a>. Famous for its rows of Victorian brownstone homes and highly sought luxury real estate, you’ll get a sense of appreciation for some of America’s oldest architecture.</p>

<p>The area was once a bay, west of the <a href="https://bostonbasinhills.org/pages/boston-shawmut-hills.html">Shawmut Peninsula</a> and was eventually filled in to reclaim city land beginning in 1857. The present-day Back Bay neighborhood was filled in by 1882.</p>

<p>One of the nation’s oldest municipalities, Boston was founded in 1630 by Puritan settlers from Boston, Lincolnshire in England, and during the American Revolution, it served as a hub for many key events. Examples include the Boston Massacre, The Boston Tea Party, the Battle of Bunker Hill, and the Siege of Boston.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Salem, Massachusetts</h2>

<p>Our first stop, just a short drive north, is Salem, Massachusetts. You’ve heard of the famous Salem witch trials…</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:768/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/The_Witch_House.jpg" alt="Top places to see in New England: The Witch House, Salem, Massachusetts" class="wp-image-213"/></figure>

<p>This enchanting town comes alive during the Fall Season. With beautiful tree canopies bursting with bright red, yellow, and orange colors, you’ll be tempted to snap a pic at every turn.</p>

<p>Salem’s historical witch trials took place between February 1692 and May 1693. These trials were a series of hearings and prosecutions of more than 200 people that were accused of witchcraft. 30 were found guilty. 19 were executed by hanging (14 women and 5 men). Another 5 people died in confinement and 1 man was tortured to death for refusing to make a plea.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="730" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:730/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Examination_of_a_Witch_-_Tompkins_Matteson.jpg" alt="Top places to see in New England: Examination of a witch during the Salem Witch Trials" class="wp-image-214"/></figure>

<p>The motivation for these trials were politically &amp; religiously based in fear and ignorance, yet this mass hysteria was nothing new. Tens of thousands of so called “witches” were executed throughout Europe during the early modern period between 1400 and 1782.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img decoding="async" width="800" height="764" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:auto/h:auto/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Pre-1500_map_spread.jpg" alt="Map of Europe with emphasis on France showing the Witch Phobia that occurred in the early modern period" class="wp-image-226"/></figure>

<p>Today’s Salem features witch-themed shops, historic houses, and spooky decorations scattered about.</p>

<p>Be sure to visit the Roger William’s House also known as “The Witch House”. It was the home of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonathan_Corwin">Judge Jonathan Corwin</a> and is the only structure in Salem today that has direct ties to the Salem Witch Trials.</p>

<p>Go visit the museum, House of the Seven Gables, a 1668 Colonial mansion named for its gables. The house was made famous by <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_House_of_the_Seven_Gables">Nathaniel Hawthorne’s 1851 novel “House of the Seven Gables”</a>.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:768/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/House_of_the_Seven_Gables_front_angle_-_Salem_Massachusetts.jpg" alt="Top places to see in New England: House of the Seven Gables in Salem, Massachusetts" class="wp-image-215"/></figure>

<p>And don’t miss getting a tour of Pioneer Village where you’ll be able to immerse yourself in a living history museum recreating Salem’s settlement and pioneer life as it was in the 17th century.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">New Hampshire White Mountains</h2>

<p>Next, we’re heading into the White Mountains of New Hampshire. The foliage here is jaw-dropping, especially around the Kancamagus Highway.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:768/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/leaf-peeping-during-fall-new-hampshire-usa-2022-11-16-17-07-06-utc.jpg" alt="Top places to see in New England: The White Mountains of New Hampshire, USA" class="wp-image-216"/></figure>

<p>Part of the Appalachian Mountains, the White Mountains are a range covering one quarter of New Hampshire and a little bit of western Maine, United States.</p>

<p>There are a number of state parks you can visit as well as the famous federally managed White Mountain National Forest that includes most of the mountain range and covering 800,000 acres or 3,200 square kilometers.</p>

<p>It’s most famous mountain is Mount Washington at 6,288 feet above sea level or 1,917 meters.</p>

<p>Visit the Arethusa Falls, the second tallest waterfall in New Hampshire or go hiking in <a href="https://polarcaves.com/">Polar Caves Park</a> where you might even see snow at some of the lowest depths. The caves were carved by large granite boulders during the last ice age.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:683/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Arethusa-Falls-2014.jpg" alt="Top places to see in New England: The Arethusa Falls in New Hampshire, USA" class="wp-image-217"/></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Stowe, Vermont</h2>

<p>Now, let’s cross over to Vermont and visit the charming town of Stowe. It’s the perfect place to sip on apple cider and take a scenic drive.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:683/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/rural-vermont-usa-at-waits-river-village-2021-08-29-04-51-00-utc.jpg" alt="Top places to see in New England: Beautiful daytime rural Vermont depicting a white church and a few homes" class="wp-image-219"/></figure>

<p>Nicknamed “The Ski Capital of the East”, Stowe is home to <a href="https://www.stowe.com/">Stowe Mountain Resort</a> for some excellent skiing.</p>

<p>If you’re a hiker itching to get some beautiful photos of changing colors, be sure to walk the <a href="https://www.stowerec.org/parks-facilities/rec-paths/stowe-recreation-path/">Stowe Recreation Path</a> that runs 5.3 miles or 8.5 km. The path stretches from the village downtown all the way to Top Notch Lodge.</p>

<p>Vermont is the US’s second least populated state and there are plenty of winding roads with beautiful rolling hills to explore. Don’t forget to pull over and breath in that fresh Vermont air along your drive.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Coastal Maine</h2>

<p>Heading east, we reach the rugged coast of Maine. The coastline here is simply breathtaking, and <a href="https://www.nps.gov/acad/index.htm">Acadia National Park</a> is a must-visit.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:683/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/portland-head-lighthouse-maine-usa-2021-08-26-16-19-37-utc.jpg" alt="Top places to see in New England: Lighthouse on the coast of Maine, USA" class="wp-image-220"/></figure>

<p>Maine is the easternmost state in New England and of the Eastern United States.</p>

<p>If you’re a seafood foodie, you’ll love exploring the many fresh seafood places along the coast.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.nps.gov/acad/index.htm">Acadia National Park</a> is absolutely breath-taking. Hike up the park’s Cadillac Mountain, the tallest mountain on the US Atlantic coast. You’ll find exposed granite domes, U-shaped valleys, stunning cobble beaches, and large glacial boulder deposits.</p>

<p>While personal vehicles aren’t allowed in the National Park itself, you can sign up for a car or bus tour along the park’s 27-mile paved loop road.</p>

<p>More rugged outdoorsy activities that you can do include hiking, bicycling, fishing, rock climbing, kayaking, and canoeing. You can also swim at Sand Beach and Echo Lake if you don’t mind the cooler temperatures.</p>

<p>Ranger-led programs also introduce visitors to the park’s diverse ecosystem. Options include shorter walks, longer hikes, boat cruises along the coast and many more.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Mystic Seaport, Connecticut</h2>

<p>Our journey now takes us to <a href="https://mysticseaport.org/">Connecticut’s Mystic Seaport</a>, where history and maritime charm collide.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:768/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/connecticut-2022-11-11-07-09-08-utc.jpg" alt="Top places to see in New England: Kayaks on a beach in Connecticut, USA" class="wp-image-221"/></figure>

<p>Explore Connecticut’s largest maritime museum notable for its sailing, ship, and boat collection. Here you’ll find more than 60 historic buildings that have been meticulously restored. You can see how people lived at this seaport village during the 19th century.</p>

<p>Connecticut played a major role in the American Revolutionary War. The state designated four delegates to the Second Continental Congress who signed the Declaration of Independence: <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Huntington_(Connecticut_politician)">Samuel Huntington</a>, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roger_Sherman">Roger Sherman</a>, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Williams_(Connecticut_politician)">William Williams</a>, and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oliver_Wolcott">Oliver Wolcott</a>.</p>

<p>The state maintained some 1,200 troops on hand at the Battle of Bunker Hill in June 1775.</p>

<p>Connecticut was also the launching site for a number of raids against Long Island. Notable orchestrators for these raids included <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Holden_Parsons">Samuel Holden Parsons</a> and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benjamin_Tallmadge">Benjamin Tallmadge</a>.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Newport, Rhode Island</h2>

<p>Rhode Island’s Newport is next on our travel list. Its mansions and coastal scenery are a visual treat you won’t forget!</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img decoding="async" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:682/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/sunset-at-castle-hill-lighthous-newport-rhode-is-2023-06-02-23-04-27-utc.jpg" alt="Top places to see in New England: Lighthouse in Newport, New Hampshire, USA" class="wp-image-222" style="width:840px;height:559px" width="840" height="559"/></figure>

<p>A seaside city that will take your breath away, it served as the most important port in Colonial Rhode Island.</p>

<p>Newport was another important location during the American Revolution. <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Ellery">William Ellery</a>, a Newporter was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.</p>

<p>There are plenty of important American Revolutionary events that occurred here, but I’ll leave that to you to explore. For now, let’s go visit the <a href="https://www.newportmansions.org/">Summer Mansions</a> – these mansions were places of refuge from the southern heat for wealthy southern planters beginning in the mid 19th century. They were built as summer cottages. One example is <a href="https://www.newportmansions.org/mansions-and-gardens/kingscote/">Kingscote</a>, a Gothic Revival mansion and today a house museum at Bowery Street and Bellevue Avenue. It was built in 1839 and was one of the first summer cottages built.</p>

<p>As time went on, the area became increasingly affluent with rich families building larger and larger mansion getaways. Many of the nation’s wealthiest families were vacationing during the summer months in Newport. Notable families include the Vanderbilts, Astors, and the Widener family.</p>

<p>A top place to explore in Newport is the <a href="http://www.cliffwalk.com/">Cliff Walk</a>. Publicly accessible, it stretches a full 3.5 miles or 5.6 kilometers. It starts from the east end of Bailey’s Beach and extends to the western end of First Beach.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Cape Cod, Massachusetts</h2>

<p>Finally we return to Massachusetts and explore the serene beauty of Cape Cod. This place offers idyllic beaches and quintessential New England charm.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="869" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:869/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/path-way-to-the-beach-at-cape-cod-2021-08-31-15-59-31-utc.jpg" alt="Top places to see in New England: Sandy path to a beach at Cape Cod" class="wp-image-223"/></figure>

<p>A hooked-shape peninsula that extends into the Atlantic Ocean, you’ll feel like you’ve driven far off the US mainland into a welcoming little paradise.</p>

<p>The cape is divided into 15 towns extending from Bourne in the Upper Cape to Provincetown in the Outer Cape.</p>

<p>Drive all the way to the Outer Cape and you can explore the <a href="https://www.nps.gov/caco/index.htm">Cape Cod National Seashore</a>, a national park with popular beaches including Nauset Light Beach, Coast Guard Beach, and Race Point Beach.</p>

<p>Provincetown, the furthest town in the Outer Cape is known for its LGBT atmosphere. The town has served as a popular gay and lesbian resort destination since the 1970s and has grown in popularity ever since.</p>

<p>Prior to then, as far back as the 1890’s Provincetown was a booming mecca for writers and artists as well as a summer tourist industry. The town eventually earned an international reputation for its artistic and literary productions. By 1898, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Webster_Hawthorne">Charles Webster Hawthorne</a> opened the <a href="https://www.capeschoolofart.org/">Cape Cod School of Art</a>.</p>

<p>Take a stroll along Commercial Street and visit the many art galleries, cafes, and restaurants. The pace of life is very relaxed and enjoyable.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">That&#8217;s a Wrap</h2>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Florence – the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">How did it get to be such an architectural marvel and who helped shape its beauty and influence over Europe?</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Let me take you on a journey through Florence, Italy where I&#8217;ll show you <strong>10 Historically Significant</strong> places you’ll want to visit when you’re here.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>A Brief History of Florence</strong></h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:683/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/florence-aerial-foggy-cityscape-panorama-view-fro-2021-08-26-22-33-04-utc.jpg" alt="Florence or Firenze aerial foggy cityscape. Panorama view from Fiesole hill. Palazzo Vecchio and Duomo Cathedral. Tuscany, Italy</em></figcaption></figure>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Let&#8217;s take a step back in time starting at the city’s Roman Origin, 2000 years ago.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">In the 1st Century BC, Florence was originally founded as a Roman military colony and quickly grew into an important center for commerce and trade.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Then came the Medieval Growth Period. During the Middle Ages, Florence became a city-state and grew into a major cultural and economic center. It was home to powerful banking families including the historically famous Medici family.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Following the Middle Ages was the Italian Renaissance, a period of cultural and artistic growth that began in the 14th century that had a profound impact on Florence. Artists such as Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Botticelli lived and worked in the city, producing some of the world’s most influential works of art.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">The most influential period was that of the Renaissance which began in the 14th century and lasted until the 17th century. At the heart of this cultural movement was the Medici family who were the most powerful and influential family at the time.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">The Medici were were rich and powerful, whose fortune began when the Medici bank was established in 1397 by Giovanni di Bicci de’ Medici. The bank grew rapidly and became one of the most powerful in Europe.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Because of their wealth, the family was able to fund the arts and architecture. They sponsored many of the most significant artists of the Italian Renaissance, including Michelangelo, da Vinci, and Botticelli.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>10 Historically Significant Landmarks in Florence</strong></h2>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Duomo</strong></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:683/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/beautiful-facade-of-duomo-cathedral-with-giotto-be-2022-12-16-16-37-26-utc.jpg" alt="Beautiful facade of Duomo Cathedral with Giotto Bell Tower in Florence, Italy" class="wp-image-137"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Beautiful facade of Duomo Cathedral with Giotto Bell Tower in Florence, Italy</em></figcaption></figure>

<p>Also known as the Duomo di Firenze and the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, it is truly breathtaking. It’s one of, if not the most recognizable landmarks in Florence.</p>

<p>Construction of the cathedral began in 1296 and it took over 140 years to complete. The dome was the last piece to be completed as it proved to be a significant architectural challenge in those early engineering days. The final construction was completed in 1436.</p>

<p>The famous dome was designed by Filippo Brunelleschi and is considered a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture.</p>

<p>One of the most fascinating features of the Duomo is the bell tower, or campanile, located adjacent to the cathedral. The tower, designed by Giotto di Bondone is covered in beautiful pink, green, and white marble and is adorned with sculptures and reliefs. It takes 400 steps to get to the top but it’s worth the views of Florence!</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Palazzo Vecchio</strong></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:683/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/view-of-palazzo-vecchio-florence-2021-08-26-15-26-54-utc.jpg" alt="View of Palazzo Vecchio in Signoria Square, Florence, Italy" class="wp-image-138"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>View of Palazzo Vecchio in Signoria Square, Florence, Italy</em></figcaption></figure>

<p class="has-medium-font-size"> A medieval palace located in the heart of Florence in the Piazza della Signoria square, it has been the seat of government for over 700 years and served as the city hall since the 14th century. The palace is famous for its ornate decorations and impressive art collection.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Over the centuries, the Palazzo Vecchio was the site of many important Florentine events including political meetings, court hearings, and public ceremonies.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Notable rooms inside the building include the Hall of the Five Hundred, a massive hall that served as the meeting place for the city’s governing council, and the Room of the Elements, which features a ceiling decorated with astrological symbols.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Uffizi Gallery</strong></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:683/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/the-palazzo-vecchio-and-uffizi-gallery-historic-2022-03-04-02-16-34-utc.jpg" alt="The Palazzo Vecchio and Uffizi Gallery, historic building and colonnade reaching into the distance, at night." class="wp-image-139"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>The Palazzo Vecchio and Uffizi Gallery, historic building and colonnade reaching into the distance, at night</em></figcaption></figure>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">One of the most famous art museums in the world, you’ll find it in the heart of Florence. </p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">It was originally built in the 16th century to house government offices but was later converted to the museum it is today. Here you’ll find an impressive collection of Renaissance art, including works by Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Botticelli, Raphael, and Caravaggio. </p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">You’ll find works such as “The Birth of Venus”, “Primavera”, and “Annunciation” to name a few. You’ll also get to see an impressive collection of ancient Roman and Greek sculptures which no doubt had an immense influence on the inspiration of the Renaissance artists.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">The Uffizi Gallery is very popular and it’s a good idea to book tickets in advance so you don’t have to wait in long lines. You might also want to checkout at their upcoming temporary exhibitions throughout the year before you book your travel.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Ponte Vecchio</strong></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="661" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:661/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/ponte-vecchio-in-florence-2021-08-26-17-20-20-utc.jpg" alt="Historical and famous Ponte Vecchio in Florence, Italy" class="wp-image-140"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Historical and famous Ponte Vecchio in Florence, Italy</em></figcaption></figure>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">A medieval bridge that spans the Arno River, it is one of the oldest and most iconic landmarks in the city. </p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Today’s bridge was built in the 14th century but it has a longer history dating back to Roman times. </p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">You’ll likely recognize this bridge as it’s been in countless post cards. The bridge is famous for its shops and stalls built directly onto the bridge itself. Originally, these shops were occupied by butchers and other merchants. Today, they are mostly jewelry, souvenir, and art shops. &nbsp;</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">You might be surprised to know that the Ponte Vecchio also has a secret passage called the Vasari Corridor. It runs along the top of the bridge and connects the Palazzo Vecchio with the Pitti Palace and was built to hide members of the Medici family from public view.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Piazza Della Signoria</strong></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="707" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:707/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/florence-italy-piazza-della-signoria-square-2022-01-28-03-11-02-utc.jpg" alt="Florence, Italy. View of Piazza Della Signoria square with Palazzo Vecchio reflecting in a puddle at sunrise</em></figcaption></figure>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">A large square in the centre of Florence that has been the political town square since the 14th century. </p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Walk through the square and you’ll be surrounded by historic buildings all around including the Palazzo Vecchio and the Uffizi Gallery.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">The Square is home to a number of important sculptures including a copy of Michelangelo’s David and the Fountain of Neptune, a large statue of the Roman sea god that was built in the 16th century. The original David by Michelangelo once stood tall in the square but was later moved to the Accademia Gallery for preservation.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">In the square, you’ll also find the open-air gallery, the Loggia dei Lanzi that houses a collection of ancient and Renaissance-period sculptures including the Perseus with the Head of Medusa by Benvenuto Cellini.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Interesting to note, the square has been the site of many important events in Florentine history, including public executions, political protests and attempted political assassinations.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Oltrarno District</strong></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:683/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/san-frediano-in-cestello-in-florence-italy-2022-12-07-01-21-20-utc.jpg" alt="San Frediano in Cestello in Florence, Italy after sunset" class="wp-image-142"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>San Frediano in Cestello in Florence, Italy after sunset</em></figcaption></figure>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">The Oltrarno district was the area of commerce and trade. Historically, this district was the headquarters of the wool and silk trade. Florence was known for it’s production of fine textiles with beautiful silks that only the very wealthy could afford. Brightly colored textiles were made possible with the chemical, allum imported from the Ottomans and used as a dye.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Take a stroll through the Oltrarno district located on the south bank of the Arno river and check out the Palazzo Pitti, a magnificent Renaissance palace that was once the residence of the grand dukes of Tuscany and now serving as a museum. You’ll find a vast collection of art including works by Raphael, Titian, and Rubens. &nbsp;</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Hospital of Innocents</strong></h3>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">The historical building was designed by Filippo Brunelleschi, the famous Italian Renaissance architect and is considered one of his most important works. The façade of the building is characterized by a series of arches that create a sense of harmony and symmetry and the interior features a beautiful courtyard with a central fountain.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">At it’s peak, the hospital housed up to 1000 children, cared for by the nuns of the order of San Giovanni di Dio.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Today, you can visit the Hospital of Innocents since it’s now a museum that tells the story of the institution and its role in the history of Florence. The museum features a collection of artwork including frescoes by Domenico Ghirlandaio and Andrea della Robbia that show the care of children in the hospital.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Basilica di San Lorenzo</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="680" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:680/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/Basilica.di_.San_.Lorenzo.jpg" alt="Basilica di San Lorenzo, Firenze, Italy" class="wp-image-179"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Basilica di San Lorenzo, Firenze, Italy</em></figcaption></figure>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Located in the heart of Florence, it is one of the largest and oldest churches in the city.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Designed by Filippo Brunelleschi and completed in the 15th century, the church features a simple, yet elegant exterior that is characteristic of the Renaissance style with a façade made of smooth unadorned stone.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">The interior of the Basilica is equally impressive with a spacious nave that is flanked by two aisles, and a beautiful altar that is made of marble featuring a sculpture of the Virgin Mary by Donatello. The church is also home to a number of chapels that are dedicated to various Saints and other religious figures.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">One of the most impressive features of the Basilica di San Lorenzo is the Medici Chapel, a mausoleum that was built for the powerful Medici family in the 16th century. The chapel is located at the back of the church and is decorated with intricate frescoes, sculptures, and mosaics. They depict scenes from the lives of the Medici family members who are buried there.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">The basilica even houses the underground crypt of Cosimo de’ Medici who lived from 1389 to 1464. Cosimo became one of the most powerful men in Florence and used his wealth to fund public works including the construction of the Medici Palace and the expansion of the University of Florence.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Boboli Gardens</strong></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:683/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/landscaped-garden-with-boxwood-balls-near-in-franc-2022-02-07-01-13-10-utc.jpg" alt="Beautifully landscaped hedges and trees in Boboli Gardens, Florence" class="wp-image-181"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Beautifully landscaped hedges and trees in Boboli Gardens, Florence</em></figcaption></figure>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Once owned by the Medici family, the gardens are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They&#8217;re one of the most famous and visited green spaces in the city and are considered a masterpiece of traditional Italian garden design.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">The gardens were commissioned by, you guessed it, the Medici family in the 16th century and were designed by a team of architects and landscapers including Niccolo Pericoli, Giorgio Vasari, and Bartolomeo Ammannati.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Covering an area over 45,000 square meters and divided into several distinct areas, each section highlights its own unique features.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">The gardens are also home to a number of picturesque paths and winding alleys, terraces and balconies offering panoramic views of Florence. You’ll find small lakes, grottoes and artificial caves that add to the charm and whimsy of the garden.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Walls of Florence</strong></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:576/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/above-view-of-gardens-and-wall-of-giardino-bardini-2021-08-26-23-03-25-utc.jpg" alt="Medieval walls of Florence, Italy" class="wp-image-180"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Medieval walls of Florence, Italy</em></figcaption></figure>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Take a hike along a section of the walls and immerse yourself in the old days of Florence. Imagine what life would have been like for Medieval Florentines.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">The walls of Florence are a historic system of fortifications that were built to protect the city from attacks during the period of the Renaissance. Constructed between the 14th and 16th centuries, they were designed by a number of famous architects and military engineers including both Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Since Florence was becoming well known for it’s immense wealth, attacks from neighboring states were not uncommon. The walls consisted of defensive structures including gates, towers, and ramparts designed to withstand attacks from artillery.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">By the 19th century, the walls were no longer necessary and much of the remaining structures were dismantled.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">You’ll find today’s remaining sections by the districts of Oltrarno, San Frediano, and San Niccolo.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">And that’s a wrap. I hope you enjoyed this tour of Florence, the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance and that you’re feeling inspired to visit these historical landmarks!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Brief History of Santorini, Greece</strong></h2>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Santorini’s history begins in the Bronze Age, between approximately 3000 and 2000 BC. The island was home to the Minoan civilization, which was arguably one of the most advanced and sophisticated of its time. The Minoans built magnificent palaces, created beautiful artwork, and had a thriving economy based on trade.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">But around 1600 BC, something cataclysmic happened!</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:683/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/active-volcano-2021-08-26-23-01-53-utc.jpg" alt="Active volcanic eruption" class="wp-image-168"/></figure>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">A massive volcanic eruption devastated the island and brought an end to the Minoan civilization. The eruption was one of the largest in recorded history and is believed to have caused a tsunami that destroyed much of the surrounding areas.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">After the eruption, the island was uninhabited for many years until the Phoenicians arrived around the 9th century BC after the collapse of the Bronze Age and toward the start of the Iron Age. They established a trading post on the island and named it Kalliste, which means “most beautiful” in Greek.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Over the centuries, Santorini was ruled by a variety of different empires and kingdoms, including the Romans, the Byzantines, and even the Venetians. Each of these groups left their mark on the island and contributed to its unique culture and architecture.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>10 Things To Do in Santorini</strong></h2>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Akrotiri Archeological Site</strong></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="680" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:680/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/Akrotiri_Triangle_Square.jpg" alt="The &quot;West House&quot; at the Akrotiri Archeological Site in Santorini, Greece" class="wp-image-160"/></figure>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">One of the most important historical sites on the island, this ancient Minoan city was buried by the volcanic eruption around 1600 BC and was only rediscovered in the 1960s.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">The site has been carefully excavated and preserved where you can get a fascinating glimpse into what life was like for the Ancient Minoan people.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">One of the most impressive discoveries at Akrotiri was a three-storey building dubbed the “West House”. This gem features elaborate wall paintings, including a famous fresco of two blue monkeys as well as a bathroom with a bathtub and flushing toilet believe it or not!</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Ancient Thera</strong></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:768/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/Ruins_of_Ancient_Thira.jpg" alt="The ruins at Ancient Thera in Santorini, Greece" class="wp-image-161"/></figure>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Located near the south-eastern part of the island, this ancient Greek city was founded in the 9th century BC and was inhabited until the 7th century AD.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Built by the Dorian Greeks, the city was named after Theras, a Spartan who led a group of colonists to Santorini.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">The city was built on a steep slope, and its buildings were arranged in terraces made of local stone. Some were even adorned with colorful frescoes.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">One of the most impressive structures at Ancient Thera was the Gymnasium, which was used for physical training and education. Today you can explore these ruins and imagine the once ancient civilization that lived and prospered here.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Fira, the Capital of Santorini</strong></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:683/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/fira-capital-of-santorini-island-and-the-view-of-v-2023-02-22-22-14-04-utc.jpg" alt="Fira, capital of Santorini and the view of the volcanic caldera, Santorini, Greece." class="wp-image-162"/></figure>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Located on the west side of the island, the town sits on the edge of the caldera offering stunning views of the Aegean sea and volcano.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Fira can be a busier spot since it’s a popular destination to visit. Here, you’ll find a variety of shops, restaurants and cafes. And if you’re looking for some nightlife, this is the place to be.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">One of the main attractions in Fira is the cable car ride that connects the town to the old port. Take a ride down the cliffside for panoramic views of the caldera and beautiful seascape. Or if you prefer travel by donkey, that’s a thing here! That’s right! You can journey down the steps of Fira on donkey-back!</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">And scratch your history itch by visiting the Museum of Prehistoric Thera which showcases the history and culture of the island from prehistoric times to the 17th century.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">You can also check out the Archeological Museum of Santorini for a collection of ancient artifacts that were excavated on the island.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Oia Village</strong></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:683/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/oia-village-at-sunset-santorini-island-2021-08-31-08-31-13-utc.jpg" alt="Oia village at sunset, Santorini island, Greece" class="wp-image-163"/></figure>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Oia is known for its stunning sunsets, labyrinth-style alleyways, and traditional Cycladic architecture. The village is perched on the edge of the caldera, offering breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea and volcano.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Famous for it’s white-washed buildings with blue-domed roofs, narrow cobblestone streets, colourful flowers and deep blue skies, you’ll be in photographer’s paradise.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">If you’re up for a hike and you love immersing yourself into historical places with ruins, definitely go and explore the remains of the Venetian Castle!</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">The Castle was built on one of the highest point of the island for clear views of incoming enemies such as pirates and dates from the time of Venetian rule of the island in the 13th century. You can explore this place on your own without any entrance fees and there is no signage on site. The castle was used as a lookout post for many centuries.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">You might also consider visiting the Naval Maritime Museum which showcases the maritime history of Santorini and the Aegean Sea. Take a dive into the island’s seafaring past, see models of traditional boats, and explore the history of navigation and shipbuilding.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The Red Beach</strong></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:683/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/red-beach-in-santorini-2022-11-16-15-25-05-utc.jpg" alt="The beautiful Red Beach in Santorini, Greece" class="wp-image-166"/></figure>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">The Red Beach is one of the most famous on the island of Santorini and is named after its distinctive red volcanic sand. The beach is surrounded by towering red cliffs and offers visitors a unique and beautiful place to relax and soak up the sun. You’ll find it on the southern coast of Santorini, close to Akrotiri.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">It’s an interesting place to explore the area’s geology and think about the major turning point in the island’s history, the Volcanic Eruption that sadly destroyed the ancient Minoan civilization. The famous Red Beach is composed of black and red pulverized volcanic rock from the nearby Santorini caldera. The red color comes from the iron-rich rocks that have been exposed from geologic activity like earthquakes and volcanoes.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Just be careful of potential landslides as these have occurred enough in the past!</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The White Beach</strong></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:683/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/young-man-on-the-white-beach-on-vacation-2021-08-28-23-02-27-utc.jpg" alt="Young man sitting on The White Beach in Santorini, Greece" class="wp-image-167"/></figure>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">This one is also unique. Known for its white pebbles and crystal-clear waters, the beach can be accessed by boat or on foot through a path that starts from the nearby Kampia beach adding to its exclusivity and charm.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">If you’re looking for unique beauty with privacy and amazing surroundings, you might consider exploring the White Beach.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">In fact, the sand is not white as you might expect from its name. The sand is actually grey pulverized volcanic rock with black pebbles that contrasts with the white rocky cliff formations. The coast is excellent for swimming with crystal clear and shallow waters.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">But expect to visit this place on your own without any amenities. If you’re looking for some fun exploration off the beaten path, this one’s for you!</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Pyrgos Village</strong></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="731" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:731/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/greece-tinos-island-of-art-cycladic-architecture-2023-03-23-17-38-24-utc.jpg" alt="Cycladic architecture at Pyrgos village, Santorini: paved street, whitewashed wall, stair, sunny day." class="wp-image-165"/></figure>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Once the capital of Santorini, you’ll find this to be quite the gem that’s often overlooked. If you’re not a fan of crowds, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by its quieter atmosphere. Located in the centre of Santorini, Pyrgos is known for it’s picturesque narrow streets, white-washed buildings, and stunning panoramic views of the island.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Here you can explore several iconic landmarks including the Church of Pyrgos and the remains of the medieval Venetian Kasteli Castle.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Don’t forget to sample the some of the local delicacies such as fava and tomato keftedes with a glass of red wine.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Santo Winery next</strong></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:683/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/wine-barrels-in-the-cellar-of-the-winery-2021-08-26-17-19-37-utc.jpg" alt="Barrels of wine in wine cellar" class="wp-image-172"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Wine barrels in the cellar of the winery,Wine barrels in wine vaults</figcaption></figure>

Each tasting experience includes a selection of wines, accompanied by local cheeses and hors d’oeuvres as well as a knowledgeable guide to lead your through your tasting experience.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Ammoudi Bay</strong></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:683/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/the-port-of-ammoudi-2022-12-17-03-41-54-utc.jpg" alt="Fishing village, Ammoudi Bay in Santorini, Greece at dusk" class="wp-image-164"/></figure>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Located on the northwest coast, you can experience a more authentic side of Santorini. Here you can escape the crowds and enjoy a quieter atmosphere with beautiful crystal-clear waters and picturesque surroundings.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">To get to Amoudi Bay, you’ll need to descend a steep staircase from the nearby village of Oia so be sure to have on a good pair of walking shoes. The stairs are lined with small shops and tavernas selling local crafts, snacks, and refreshments. When you reach the bottom, you’ll be greeted by a small harbor filled with fishing boats and sailboats.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Take a stroll along the waterfront and dine at one of the many tavernas that specialize in freshly caught seafood including octopus, squid, and fish. You can opt for traditional Greek dishes like moussaka and souvlaki too.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">For the active swimmers, divers, and cave explorers, this place is for you. There are several sea caves and rocky cliffs that are popular spots to explore and dive from.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Megalochori Village</strong></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:683/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/santorini-style-building-2021-09-03-00-06-58-utc.jpg" alt="Megalochori village in Santorini, Greece midday with Cycladic architecture, whitewash buildings and blue sky" class="wp-image-169"/></figure>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">The name Megalochori means “big village” in Greek and it was once one of the largest villages on the island. Today, it’s a peaceful and quiet place to experience a more authentic side of Santorini.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">If you’re into wine making, you can explore the winery, Vanetsanos.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">You’ll notice that the village of Megalochori is close to our previously toured Santo Winery. This coastal area is excellent for growing the perfect grapes for the perfect wine.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">You might also want to trek over to the historic chapel of Agios Nikolaos which dates back to the 17th century. The chapel is known for its beautiful frescoes and its bell tower, one of the tallest on the island.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img decoding="async" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:680/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/santorini-island-greece-2021-08-26-17-04-56-utc.jpg" alt="Santorini Island, Greece, Beautiful View of Blue Ocean and Traditional Dome Church Architecture" class="wp-image-170" width="840" height="557"/></figure>

<p>Tokyo, a technologically advanced mega city with an estimated 37 million inhabitants, 60,000 restaurants and a convenient vending machine at every turn.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">My Top 5 Things to See &amp; Do</h2>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Number 1: The Iconic Tokyo Tower</strong> inspired by La Tour Eiffel (the Eiffel tower) in the Shiba-koen district of Minato Tokyo</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:683/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/tokyo-tower-2022-12-15-21-55-49-utc.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-102"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Tokyo Tower</figcaption></figure>

<p>It was built in 1958 as a communications and observation tower. Standing at 333 meters or 1092 feet, it is the second tallest structure in Japan.</p>

<p>Here, you’ll get amazing views of the city when you check out the observation deck. Underneath the tower, there is a four storey building called FootTown which houses museums, shopping and restaurants.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Number 2: Tokyo Imperial Palace</strong> – the main residence of the Emperor of Japan &amp; located in the Chiyoda district of the Chiyoda ward of Tokyo</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:683/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/tokyo-japan-at-the-imperial-palac-2021-08-26-18-13-13-utc.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-103"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Tokyo, Japan lookout tower at the Imperial Palace moat.</figcaption></figure>

<p>Here, you’ll also get to see Fukiage Palace, the Emperor’s residence, the main palace Kyuden that holds receptions and ceremonies, residences of the Imperial Family, museums, and an archive.</p>

<p>The modern-day Imperial Palace sits atop old remnants of Edo Castle built in 1457. You’ll notice remaining walls, moats, and ramparts that survive to this day.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Number 3: Shibuya Scramble Square</strong> at Shibuya Station</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="684" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:684/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/shibuya-tokyo-japan-2021-08-26-18-13-03-utc.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-104"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan cityscape over Shibuya Crossing.</figcaption></figure>

<p>The must-see iconic scramble crossing is a model for major cities around the world prioritizing pedestrians over cars. Every few minutes, you’ll see hundreds of people crossing this major urban intersection in all directions.</p>

<p>Shibuya station is an energetic place with lots of lights and people. Here, you’ll get a sense of downtown Tokyo. Venture to a rooftop show nearby to experience the city from above. This bustling neighbourhood is known for its shopping, nightlife and of course, the iconic scramble.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Number 4: Piss Alley (Omoide Yokocho)</strong> in Shinjuku neighborhood</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="681" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:681/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/beautiful-japanese-girl-walking-in-tokyo-concept-2022-02-08-05-30-54-utc.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-105"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Beautiful japanese girl walking in Tokyo. Concept about teenagers and school</figcaption></figure>

<p>Located in the bustling Shinjuku neighborhood of Tokyo, Piss Alley also called Omoide Yokocho meaning “Memory Lane” is a narrow and quaintly decorated street filled with bars and street food stalls.</p>

<p>The history of Piss Alley dates back to the post-WW2 era when it was a black market filled with illegal bars and gambling dens. Patrons would gather to drink and socialize and with a lack of bathroom facilities, they would relieve themselves by the nearby train tracks, hence the name Piss Alley.</p>

<p>It was later cleaned up and transformed into the vibrant dining destination it is today while holding onto it’s old Japanese Showa-era charm.</p>

<p>Walk down this alley and you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time of Old Japan.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Number 5: Meiji Shrine</strong> in Shibuya neighborhood</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:683/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/meiji-shrine-in-tokyo-japan-2021-08-30-13-19-24-utc.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-106"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Meiji Shrine in Tokyo, Japan.</figcaption></figure>

<p>A peaceful escape from the city and still located in the bustling Shibuya neighborhood, the Meiji Shrine is an oasis hidden away in a forest. It is dedicated to the spirits of Emperor Meiji and his consort, Empress Shoken.</p>

<p>Completed in 1920, Meiji Shrine is known for its traditional Japanese architecture and peaceful atmosphere making it a popular choice for weddings.</p>

<p>In order to get to the shrine, visitors walk through a beautifully lined path of towering trees to set the ambiance.</p>

<p>Arriving at the shrine, there is a main hall where visitors can pray and make offerings. In Japanese culture, the concept of “wa” or harmony is highly valued and they place a strong emphasis on maintaining peace and tranquility in their daily lives, especially in urban areas like Tokyo.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">To Summarize</h2>

<p>If you’re planning a trip to Tokyo, be sure to check out these top 5 places: T<strong>okyo Tower, Tokyo Imperial Palace, Shibuya Scramble, Piss Alley (Omoide Yokocho), Meiji Shrine</strong></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Known for its natural beauty and unique culture, Iceland is an unforgettable place to visit.</h2>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">The landscapes of Iceland are breathtaking. Couple that with dancing Northern Lights, and you’ve got front row tickets to an amazing show.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Explore the glaciers, the waterfalls, the hot springs, and the geysers.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Iceland is Blessed with an Abundance of Geothermal Activity</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:683/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/namafjall-geothermal-area-iceland-2022-03-07-23-57-58-utc.jpeg" alt="" class="wp-image-91"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Namafjall geothermal area, Iceland</figcaption></figure>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Located on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a divergent plate boundary where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are separating AND combined with Iceland’s volcanic geology, there is a constant supply of geothermal energy.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Over 25% of Iceland’s electricity production comes from geothermal activity.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Of course, this means there are plenty of hot springs too!</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">The Hot Springs</h3>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">The most famous is the Blue Lagoon located in the southwestern part of the island.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">And the Secret Lagoon in Fludir is one of the oldest hot springs in Iceland. Here, you’ll find yourself drift into total relaxation cradled by endless nature.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">The Strokkur Geyser</h3>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">And if you want to go and see something truly special, the Strokkur geyser which erupts every 5-10 minutes and shoots up 30 meters in the air won’t disappoint!</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">The Northern Lights</h3>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Iceland is truly remarkable when you witness the show of the night sky, the Northern Lights.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">The Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis can be seen in all their glory during clear skies. You can make the show more memorable and unique by going on a guided dogsledding or snowmobile tour out into the wilderness.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Forget about everything for a moment, sit back, and watch in amazement.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Iceland&#8217;s Rich Cultural History</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="874" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:874/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/viking-warrior-with-sword-standing-near-drakkar-on-2021-08-26-16-21-13-utc.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-93"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Viking warrior with sword standing in front of ship</figcaption></figure>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">According to Landnamabok (the Book of Settlements), The Vikings, mostly from Norway settled in Iceland in the late 9th century.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Led by a man named Ingolfr Arnarson, the Vikings landed in 874, established a settlement at Reykjavik which is today the Capital city and brought with them their Norse language, religious &amp; cultural practices and customs.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">According to historical records, there were smaller Irish and Scottish monk settlements scattered around Iceland before the permanent arrival and settlement of the Norse Vikings.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">These early Christian monks were the Celtic influence to the island and were known as the Papar.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Many of the Norse Vikings and Celtic Papar intermarried and brought both Norse &amp; Celtic influence.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">The Old Norse language was the most influential tongue at that time and it evolved into the modern day Icelandic language spoken today. Iceland’s culture is primarily Norse with some Celtic influence in its religious practices and customs.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">You can learn more about Iceland’s history and culture by visiting the National Museum of Iceland or the Settlement Exhibition, both located in Reykjavik, the capital city.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Reykjavik, the Capital City</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:683/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/tilt-shift-aerial-view-of-reykjavik-2022-11-03-04-28-12-utc.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-94"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Aerial view of city Reykjavik, Iceland</figcaption></figure>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">The city is home to a wide variety of bars, clubs, and restaurants, many of which stay open late into the night.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Go on a pub crawl or take a food tour to sample some of the local cuisine.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Or if techno and electronic music is your thing, you’ll find exactly that at Reykjavik’s trendy clubs with DJs.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">A popular spot for a night out in Reykjavik is the 101 district, also known as the city centre.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Here you’ll find the city’s most popular bars and clubs including Kaffibarinn, which was once owned by the late Bjork’s ex-boyfriend, and is considered one of the city’s most iconic bars, or Lebowski Bar, a cozy spot with a relaxed atmosphere that serves White Russians and has a bowling alley.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Or venture the city’s main shopping street, Laugavegur and you’ll find everything from traditional Icelandic bars to more modern clubs, as well as a good selection of restaurants and cafes.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Check out club Hurra for some electronic music or club Prikio for some live music and a more relaxing atmosphere.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Venture Into the Wild Outdoors</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img decoding="async" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:682/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/woman-is-placing-an-ice-screw-ice-climbing-on-fro-2022-03-02-18-59-11-utc.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-96" width="840" height="559"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Ice climbing on frozen waterfall</figcaption></figure>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Feeling adventurous? Try some ice-climbing!</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Go on a whale-watching tour to take a boat trip to see the puffins, seals, and other marine life that call Iceland home.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">In conclusion</h2>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Iceland is a destination that truly has something for everyone, from natural beauty to rich culture, outdoor activities, and a vibrant nightlife.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Have you been to Iceland? If not, would you go? If you haven’t thought about Iceland as your next travel destination, its worth considering. With its unique diverse attractions, it’s a destination that you’ll never forget.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Rio de Janeiro is located on the Atlantic Ocean in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The city is the country’s 2nd most populous, after Sao Paulo.</p>

<h3 class="has-text-align-left wp-block-heading"><strong>A Brief History on Rio de Janeiro</strong></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:683/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/antique-compass-2021-08-26-16-35-46-utc.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-75"/></figure>

<ul style="font-size:30px">
<li>Rio de Janeiro translates to River of January because of its colonization by the first Portuguese explorer, Gaspar de Lemos on January 1st, 1502.</li>
</ul>

<ul style="font-size:30px">
<li>Prior to the European arrival, the area of Rio de Janeiro was originally inhabited and shaped by the Tupi-Guarani people for thousands of years.</li>
</ul>

<ul style="font-size:30px">
<li>As a gesture of good faith and respect for the indigenous people, the discovered Guanabara bay at the time of the earliest European settlement was named in the Tupi language and translates to “arm of the sea”. </li>

<li>This early settlement in 1503 was later abandoned and in 1565, the Portuguese established a new settlement they called Sao Sebastio do Rio de Janeiro which translates to “Saint Sebastian of the River of January”. This early European settlement became the now metropolitan city of Rio de Janeiro.</li>
</ul>

<h3 class="has-text-align-left wp-block-heading"><strong>5 Fun &amp; Exciting Things to See &amp; Do in Rio de Janeiro</strong></h3>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Number One. Christ the Redeemer Statue</strong></h4>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:683/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/rio-with-corcovado-sugarloaf-mountain-and-guanaba-2022-07-26-05-36-12-utc.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-80"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Aerial view of Rio with Corcovado Mountain, Sugarloaf Mountain and Guanabara Bay at sunset &#8211; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil</figcaption></figure>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">The must see iconic &amp; UNESCO World Heritage site, The Christ the Redeemer Statue sits atop Corcovado Mountain in the Tijuca Forest National Park. The statue stands at 98 feet tall and 98 feet wide. </p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">When you visit this iconic landmark, you’ll get panoramic breath-taking views of the city and surrounding areas. </p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">You can get here by train from Cosme Velho or by taking a vehicle up the mountain. Or you can even rent bikes to get to the heritage site.</p>

<h4 class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-heading"><strong>Number Two. The Lapa Arches</strong></h4>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="676" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:676/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/arcos-da-lapa-arches-rio-de-janeiro-brazil-2022-03-17-15-37-37-utc.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-76"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Arcos da Lapa Arches &#8211; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil</figcaption></figure>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">The Lapa Arches are a historic aqueduct and popular spot for music and nightlife. The Arches were built in the 18th century to carry water from the Carioca River to the city and were later used as a viaduct for a tramway. The arches stretch for nearly a mile and are lined with bars, restaurants and clubs.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">The arches are a popular spot for live music, especially traditional Brazilian samba and choro.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">You’ll find the Arches in the Lapa neighborhood which is known for its bohemian atmosphere and colonial-era architecture. In this neighborhood, you can also see the colorful Selaron Steps – a staircase covered in tiles created by the Chilean-born artist Jorge Selaron. This is where you’ll get to experience the local culture and the vibrant nightlife of Rio.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Number Three. The Iconic Beaches</strong></h4>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="682" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:682/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/panorama-of-rio-de-janeiro-at-twilight-brazil-co-2021-08-30-13-16-19-utc.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-77"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Panorama of Rio de Janeiro at sunset, Brazil. Copacabana beach at sunset. Rio de Janeiro</figcaption></figure>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Take your pick! Two of the most famous you might want to check out include the Copacabana and Ipanema beaches. Located next to each other, they stretch for miles and are covered in beautiful white sand with clear tropical waters.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">The Copacabana beach is one of the most famous world-wide and stretches over 2.5 miles. It’s known for its lively atmosphere with vendors selling everything from food and drink to beachwear and souvenirs.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size"> If you’re the sporty type, you can even join in on some local beach soccer and beach volleyball.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Ipanema beach is more upscale and offers a more relaxed atmosphere with less people than Copacabana.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Both beaches continue their excitement during the evenings and late into the night, making them essential hot spots for Rio’s bustling nightlife.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Number Four. Tijuca National Park</strong></h4>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="694" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:694/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/aerial-view-of-marapendi-lagoon-and-reserve-at-bar-2022-07-26-05-34-23-utc.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-81"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Aerial view of Marapendi Lagoon and Reserve at Barra da Tijuca &#8211; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil</figcaption></figure>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">This park is immense, covering an area of over 32,000 acres. You’ll want to rent a bike to explore as much as you can. Previously I mentioned The Christ the Redeemer Heritage Site as my Number One place to see – well that’s located in the Tijuca National Park. You might consider combining these two activities together but remember the park is huge so plan a full afternoon or even full day excursion to get the most out of Tijuca National Park.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Located in the mountains of Rio de Janeiro, Tijuca is the largest urban park in the world. You’ll get to see a diverse range of flora and fauna including many bird species, monkeys, and other animals.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">The park is also home to several waterfalls including the Cascatinha Waterfall, and several trails that offer panoramic views of the city below.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">You can choose to partake in a guided tour or go on your own.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Number Five. Feira Nordestina Market</strong></h4>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:683/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/typical-spanish-concept-of-tapas-2021-08-31-17-28-11-utc.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-78"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Typical Spanish concept of tapas. The concept includes a variety of pieces of jamon, chorizo, salami, bowls with olives, peppers, shrimps, anchovies, chickpeas puree.</figcaption></figure>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Also known as the Northeastern Fair, the Feira Nordestina Market is a traditional fair that takes place in the Lapa neighborhood and is held on Sundays.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">Explore the local Brazilian culture when you visit the vendors that offer a wide variety of handicrafts including pottery, jewelry, and woven textiles. You’ll also find clothing and traditional Northeastern Brazilian foods.</p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">The Northeastern Brazilian culture is known for its rich history, vibrant music and dance, and delicious cuisine like acaraje and caruru. Be sure to check it out.</p>

<h3 class="has-text-align-left wp-block-heading"><strong>In Conclusion&#8230;</strong></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://mlkqpuof39zn.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:683/q:mauto/f:best/https://travelthis.cc/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/rio-de-janeiro-2022-11-02-03-19-52-utc.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-79"/></figure>

<p class="has-medium-font-size">When you visit Rio de Janeiro, consider visiting the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue, the Lapa Arches, of course the iconic beaches Copacabana and Ipanema, Tijuca National Park, and the Feira Nordestina Market held on Sundays.</p>
