Explore the glaciers, the waterfalls, the hot springs, and the geysers.
Iceland is Blessed with an Abundance of Geothermal Activity
Located on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a divergent plate boundary where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are separating AND combined with Iceland’s volcanic geology, there is a constant supply of geothermal energy.
Over 25% of Iceland’s electricity production comes from geothermal activity.
Of course, this means there are plenty of hot springs too!
The Hot Springs
The most famous is the Blue Lagoon located in the southwestern part of the island.
And the Secret Lagoon in Fludir is one of the oldest hot springs in Iceland. Here, you’ll find yourself drift into total relaxation cradled by endless nature.
The Strokkur Geyser
And if you want to go and see something truly special, the Strokkur geyser which erupts every 5-10 minutes and shoots up 30 meters in the air won’t disappoint!
The Northern Lights
Iceland is truly remarkable when you witness the show of the night sky, the Northern Lights.
The Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis can be seen in all their glory during clear skies. You can make the show more memorable and unique by going on a guided dogsledding or snowmobile tour out into the wilderness.
Forget about everything for a moment, sit back, and watch in amazement.
Iceland's Rich Cultural History
According to Landnamabok (the Book of Settlements), The Vikings, mostly from Norway settled in Iceland in the late 9th century.
Led by a man named Ingolfr Arnarson, the Vikings landed in 874, established a settlement at Reykjavik which is today the Capital city and brought with them their Norse language, religious & cultural practices and customs.
According to historical records, there were smaller Irish and Scottish monk settlements scattered around Iceland before the permanent arrival and settlement of the Norse Vikings.
These early Christian monks were the Celtic influence to the island and were known as the Papar.
Many of the Norse Vikings and Celtic Papar intermarried and brought both Norse & Celtic influence.
The Old Norse language was the most influential tongue at that time and it evolved into the modern day Icelandic language spoken today. Iceland’s culture is primarily Norse with some Celtic influence in its religious practices and customs.
You can learn more about Iceland’s history and culture by visiting the National Museum of Iceland or the Settlement Exhibition, both located in Reykjavik, the capital city.
